Music Director Laureate Edo de Waart conducts Elgar’s First Symphony, which took Elgar a decade to write due to the pressure of composing in Beethoven’s shadow — but with its intense and hopeful music, it became an immediate and enduring success. Pianist Joyce Yang returns to perform Rachmaninoff’s virtuosic Rhapsody, which explores 24 variations on Paganini’s venerated caprice for violin, all in one exhilarating movement.
