The program begins with some reflections on and invitations to respond to Henri Nouwen’s and the Rembrandt painting of The Return of the Prodigal Son. Participants are encouraged to read the “prologue” of Nouwen’s The Return of the Prodigal Son. It’s titled “Encounter with a Painting” and is about 16 pages long. Copies available upon request.

Next we turn to a survey of Emmaus paintings through history (power point with art slides), encouraging participants to respond to the different paintings.

The culmination of the presentation will be a reading and discussion of Levertov’s The Servant Girl at Emmaus in connection with the Velazquez painting-how different the painting is from other “Emmaus” paintings, and what Levertov is responding to in the painting. A copy of Denise Levertov’s poem, The Servant Girl at Emmaus will be provided. Refreshments will be served. Please call 414-220-3217 to register.
