MCH-Tim Crain Series-The U.S and the 1960s-Lyndon Johnson and Vietnam
September 27, 2023 @ 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
FreeUnfortunately, what LBJ would most be remembered for was the war in Vietnam. He misled Congress into passing the Gulf of Tonkin resolution in 1964, which gave the President of the United States a freehand in Vietnam. Following his election victory in 1964 against Barry Goldwater, Johnson significantly increased American forces in Vietnam from 16,000 to over 500,000 just three years later. Antiwar protests erupted across many college campuses in the United States, and the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968 also proved to be a great challenge for the nation.
