MCH-Frederick Law Olmsted & His Milwaukee Legacies

June 9, 2023 @ 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Frederick Law Olmsted, renowned for designing Central Park in New York City, also designed several Milwaukee parks.  He was America’s foremost proponent of “parks for all people” as a way to make cities livable and to foster democracy. Appreciating the restorative power of nature, Olmsted wanted everyone to have easy access to beautiful green spaces. This PowerPoint presentation explores how he laid the foundations for Milwaukee’s naturalistic parks and parkways, starting with Lake, Riverside and Washington parks, which he designed in the late 1800s.

Virginia Small writes and speaks about topics relating to environmental issues, public spaces and historic landscapes. A greater Milwaukee native, she returned here after working on the East Coast for several decades as a journalist and communications professional. She is a member of Lake Park Friends and will help us understand Olmsted’s vision, celebrate his 200th birthday, and appreciate his very positive legacy in Milwaukee.
